Brooks Murray Architects were asked to prepare a proposal to redevelop a series of garages to the rear of an existing nineteenth century Italianate building. A planning application was submitted for 9 new houses in a mews style.
The site was located to the rear of a locally listed building, sitting within a conservation area, with difficult access to the garages. Further challenges of overlooking, privacy and overhanging trees required delicate solutions.
We proposed a mono-pitch roof to minimise the height of the houses. Clerestory glazing and offset windows provide the daylight needed without compromising privacy. Opaque glazing protects from overlooking neighbours.
The proposal seeks to meet local and national sustainability targets with an energy efficient heating system, highly insulating building fabric and a green roof.
The result are 9 contemporary 2-bedroom mews houses, centrally located, and within the setting of a locally listed building.
